Elmiene Jacksonville Concert reviews
Different than the movie, but fun non-the-less...
For Valentine's Day, I took my wife to see Elmiene on stage at ASU Gammage. We tried to come in with an open mind knowing it isn't going to be the movie we are used to, but our expectations were a little high. Needless to say, we are avid Disney fans and personally think that Mary Poppins the movie is one of the best of all time.
It felt like a different experience, although they definitely changed many of the songs. It had some similar underlying themes and obviously shared some of the same music. I personally think that it is hard to match Walt Disney's original genius, or the characters portrayed by Dick Van Dike or Julie Andrews.
We still enjoyed the show, especially the step-in-time sequence. I felt like they adapted it well to the stage and made it a shining moment in the performance. After the reaction from the audience, I don't think we were the only ones that felt this way.
The second act definitely improved on the rushed first act and fortunately tied up the story that felt a bit un-focused throughout the first act. We definitely enjoyed the final stunt (that I won't spoil here), we did not expect that to happen and felt like it topped off some other minor hints of magic throughout the show.
It was a fun show nonetheless and if you like Disney, like shows, then you will most likely enjoy Elmiene. All in all, it was not as great as the original Walt Disney film. Well, we were right, it was nothing much at all like the movie.
